Australia and New Zealand fierce rivals for ski business
There is skiing to be had in Perisher again and other resorts are opening shortly in Australia. Resorts in New Zealand are preparing to open as well after a better start to the winter than last year. The two countries are fierce rivals for ski business. Australia faces a difficult winter – it is not dissimilar to Switzerland in Europe. A poor exchange rate means that not only are foreigners not coming but also locals are skiing elsewhere. In 2010 there were 2.03m skier days. In 2011 it was down to 1.87m. In New Zealand 35% of the total skier days are from Australians.
